Long Term Care
Make Sure Your Long Term Care Insurance Fits Your Growing Needs
Long term care insurance is an important part of a good financial plan because long term care needs can be extremely expensive and may occur at any age. New tax laws and tax-qualified plans help make long term care insurance more attractive and affordable.
Benefits
The high cost of long-term care is a serious threat to the financial security of millions of Americans. Long-term care is the type of care you would require if you needed help with basic activities of daily living such as bathing, dressing or eating. Nursing home costs are rising at 4.6% per year and assisted living is rising at 5.2%.
- The average annual cost of a nursing home stay today can be $74,825 ($205/day) for a semi-private room and $83,585 ($229/day) for a private room.
- The average annual cost of assisted living is $39,576 ($3,298/month) and can be as high as $78,000 ($6,500/month) and continues to rise.
- Home health care is $19 to $20 per hour, averaging $67 per day. Home health care helps with IADL* as well as ADL*.
- The ability to be independent is priceless. Health is everything. Buy long-term care insurance while you are healthy.

* IADL is defined as Instrumental Activities of Daily Living including: Cooking, cleaning, shopping, house keeping, laundry, and bill paying. These are 6 things children, the neighbor or a church group can help you with to stay out of a nursing home. If you do not have a good support system, you will have to pay for these services or go to an assisted living facility where you pay to have these services.
** ADL is defined as Activities of Daily Living including: transferring, toileting, bathing, dressing, eating, continence. You need to be unable to do 2 of these 6 to trigger a Long Term Care policy.
